Jeweller Nirav Modi has refused to join the investigation into the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam worth Rs 12,636 crore, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said on Wednesday. The CBI said that earlier this month, they had written to Modi on his official e-mail id, asking him to join the investigation. To which, Modi replied, "I have businesses abroad, and I can't come."

Nirav Modi and his family left the country in early January. CBI then directed Modi to appear before them by next week and told him to immediately approach the Indian high commission in whichever country he is so that he can be brought back to India. The CBI also said it does not know where Modi is hiding.

In another development in the case, the CBI arrested an internal chief auditor of PNB, MK Sharma, who was the chief manager of the Brady House branch.
