Still have old Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes? Today is last day to spend them

The government had set a deadline of November 24, to spend the old, decommissioned notes at select places.

If you still have a stash of Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 notes then November 24, i.e. today, is the last day to spend them. The government, while decommissioning the use of the old Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 notes effective November 8 midnight, had allowed the use of the old notes at select outlets, like state-run cooperative stores and petrol pumps, government hospitals, and burial grounds. 

The deadline was extended twice after, with the final date notified as November 24.

According to this, after Thursday midnight, it will not be possible to spend the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. You will only be able to exchange it at banks or post offices, or deposit them into your bank accounts. 

Here's a list of all the places where you can spend the last of your old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes:

Government hospitals

Pharmacies in government hospitals for buying medicines with doctors' prescription

Railway ticket booking counters, ticket counters of government-run bus services, airline ticket counters at airports. 

Petrol, diesel, CNG gas stations authorised by public sector oil companies 

Consumer cooperative stores authorised by State or Central government

Milk booths authorised by state government

Crematoria and burial grounds.
