Godrej is one of the top companies in India and Godrej now sell its products in more than 90 countries of the world. You would be surprised to know that Godrej, which has now turned into a USD 76 billion company by market valuation.  After studying law, Ardeshir Godrej joined a firm of Bombay solicitors and in 1894, he was sent to East Africa by his firm in connection with a case. During his stay in East Africa, Godrej understood that he was not fit to be a lawyer. Godrej decided to return to India and joined a chemist shop as an assistant.

Godrej started his own business by borrowing Rs 3000 from Merwanji Mucherji Cama, a prominent Parsi of his time. He had just started the business of manufacturing surgical blades when he had a fight over getting 'Made in India' written on it. Actually Ardeshir Godrej used to make surgical instruments for a British company. He wanted that Made in India should be written on those tools, which was not acceptable to the British company. Godrej stuck to his decision and as a result the order went out of his hands and he had to close his business.

One day, Godrej read in newspaper that the police commissioner had advised people to keep more security in their homes and offices due to the increasing incidents of theft in Bombay. Godrej instantly got the idea of a new business and started the business of lock making. Once again, Ardeshir Godrej took loan and started his work in a 215 square feet godown next to the Bombay Gas Works and with this the Godrej Company was born in 1897. The lock manufactured by Godrej grabbed the attention of people and the business took off.

Ardeshir Godrej then asked his younger brother Pirojsha to join the business. After tasting success with locks, Godrej Brothers started making lockers and cabinets to keep jewellery and money safe. In 1958, Godrej made the first refrigerator in India and in 1974, Godrej launched liquid hair color products. Godrej built the launch vehicle and lunar orbiter for Chandrayaan-1 in 2008. Today the company's business is spread across 90 countries and its valuation has reached USD 76 billion.
