Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone (MPSEZ) will be developing a coal import terminal at Visakhapatnam port. The port operator is expected to have all three planned terminals- Hazira, Goa and Visakhapatnam operational by 2013.

MPSEZ, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, on Tuesday stated Visakhapatnam Port Trust has awarded it the bid to develop a coal import terminal.

The total investment for this project is pegged around Rs300 crore. The terminal expected to handle around 6.5 million metric tonne per annum will be completed in two years.

This project marks Mundra’s entry into the eastern coast. Until now, Mundra had presence only on the western coast, with two operational ports at Mundra and Dahej in Gujarat.

It is also developing a coal-handling terminal at Mormugao port in Goa and a
multi-purpose terminal at Hazira in Gujarat.

The company targets to complete both these terminals within two years.

“Mundra port remains committed towards setting up world class port infrastructure and facilities in India. The contract to set up the berth on the Visakhapatnam port marks our entry on the east coast. This is in line with our objective of having a pan- India presence,” said Gautam Adani, chairman, Adani Group in a company press release.

MPSEZ will be developing this coal import terminal on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis for Visakhapatnam Port Trust.
