Mankading in cricket- Memorable incidents in IPL and world events
Mankading is a particular typ of run out which is named after legendary Indian bowler Vinoo Mankad, ‘Mankading’ is a method of run out where a bowler dismisses a non-striker by hitting the bails before bowling when the latter is outside the crease. Though this is a legally permissible dismissal, it is considered against the spirit of the game.

1.R Ashwin Mankading
Ravichandran Ashwin has been in the centre of the mankading controversy ever since IPL 2019. In the build-up to IPL 2020, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting said that R Ashwin will not be allowed to Mankad. In the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, R Ashwin was put to the test. Aaron Finch had wandered out of the crease and R Ashwin was within his right to mankad him. As per the old rule, you had to warn the batsman once. However, in the new rule, one does not have to warn. 2.R Ashwin Mankading
In IPL 2019, the situation became ugly. During the game between Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Capitals, R Ashwin mankaded Jos Buttler without warning and there were ugly scenes. The entire cricket world was divided with some supporting Ashwin while others arguing that the spirit of the game was not upheld. This was however not the first time that Ashwin had mankaded a particular batsman. (Image credit: Twitter)
3.R Ashwin Mankading
The first major instance of Mankading for Ashwin was during the 2012 CB series tri-series that was held in Australia. During the ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Brisbane, Ashwin mankaded Sri Lanka batsman Lahiru Thirimanne and he appealed. 4.Sachithra Senanayake Mankading
However, if one thought that Jos Buttler was a victim of the Mankad for the first time in IPL 2019, you are mistaken. In the 2014 ODI series between Sri Lanka and England in Edgbaston, Sachithra Senanayake mankaded Jos Buttler and there was a massive debate about the legality of the Mankad law. 5.Kapil Dev Mankading
However, the first instance of a modern mankading incident took place in the ODI between South Africa and India in 1992. It was the first major tour between India and South Africa and there was tremendous fanfare. However, the fanfare was soured when Kapil Dev mankaded Peter Kirsten. Apparently, Kapil Dev had warned Kirsten three times but the batsman continued to wander out of the crease. Having seen enough, Kapil Dev mankaded Kirsten and he was not happy.
