World Cup 2019: Despite semifinal loss, Team India wins whopping amount as prize money

The winners of the 10-team tournament earned a purse of $ 4 million, the highest prize money to date.

While the winners got $4 million, runners-up got $ 2 million. There were even incentives for winning each of the 45 league matches.

The runners-up were assured of $2 million and the losing semifinalists $800,000 each at the end of the 46-day tournament being played across 11 venues from 30 May. 

Even if a team could not manage to win a single match in the 2019 World Cup, it would take a handsome $100,000 home.

Where the winner of each group stage match received $40,000 per win, India won 7 matches in the group stage.

The Men in Blue received a sum total of $2,80,000 ($40,000*7) courtesy for the group stage.

After converting the sum into Indian Rupees, Virat Kohli and co. earned a whopping ₹1,90,40,000 (taking conversion rate as 1 USD = 68 INR) just from the group stage.

India's loss to New Zealand in the semi-finals earned them $800,000. The prize money received for reaching the semifinals equals to ₹5,44,00,000.

Adding both the group stage and semi-finals amount, team India’s rewards total up to $10,80,000 (₹7,34,40,000 - Seven Crores Thirty-Four Lakhs and Forty Thousand Rupees).

Team India had earned ₹17,22,50,000 for winning the World Cup in 2011 whereas their 2015, the prize money was ₹5,74,20,000 (6 wins in group stage + losing semi-finalists).

The 2019 prize money, hence, is more than that of 2015 but is nowhere close to 2011.

• Runner-up - $2,000,000 (up from $1,750,000 of 2015)
• Losing Semi-finalists - $800,000 (up from $600,000 of 2015)
• Winner of each group stage match - $40,000 (down from $45,000 of 2015)
• Teams eliminated in group stage - $100,000 (up from $35,000 of 2015).

(Since there are no losing quarter-finalists in 2019, ICC allotted prize money to the teams eliminated in group stage).
