Team India captain Rohit Sharma left for Sri Lanka on Wednesday to join the national team for their upcoming Asia Cup 2023 campaign. Rohit, who led India to victory in the 2018 edition, aims to make history once again by guiding the Men in Blue to their eighth Asia Cup title, the first since 2018.
Rohit stands among the elite group of Indian captains who have lifted the prestigious Asia Cup trophy in the past. This distinguished list includes Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, and MS Dhoni. Notably, Azhar and Dhoni are the only two Indian skippers who have clinched the trophy twice.
Rohit's inaugural triumph as India's skipper came in the form of the 2018 Asia Cup trophy. During that time, he assumed leadership of the team in the absence of the regular captain, Virat Kohli.
Rohit left for Lanka this morning where he was clicked by the Indian paparazzi.
One of the paps asked him about India's chances in the Asia Cup to which the Hitman replied, "jeetenge, jeetenge".
The BCCI selectors made a significant announcement on Monday, revealing a formidable Indian lineup for the upcoming Asia Cup. Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the captain, with Hardik Pandya serving as his deputy.
This exciting news also brings back some key players who have been sidelined due to injuries. Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Prasidh Krishna will all be returning to the ODI setup, adding strength and depth to the team.
While Bumrah and Krishna have already made their comeback in international cricket, participating in the T20I series in Ireland, Rahul and Iyer will join the squad directly for the Asia Cup. It is worth noting that both players have not represented India since March of this year.
