The International Cricket Council incurred losses of approximately USD 20 million (Rs 167 crore) while hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 games in the USA, as reported by PTI. This financial setback is expected to be a focal point of discussion during the upcoming ICC Annual Conference commencing on Friday in Colombo. Although not included in the nine-point agenda of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the report indicates that it will be addressed as a post-event review. A significant portion of the tournament was held in the USA, including the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan in New York.

One of the key topics to be discussed during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is the appointment of BCCI Secretary Jay Shah as the new ICC Chairman, replacing Greg Barclay. According to a report by PTI, a source within the ICC has indicated that the transition of leadership to Shah is of great interest to all members of the organization. This change in leadership is anticipated to have a significant impact on the future direction of the world body.

"It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling off period in Indian board starts in 2025 as per constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, then Barclay can't complete his third term of two years from December 2024 to December 2026," the ICC source said.

"There is a school of thought that what if ICC's chairmanship term changes from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, so the cumulative term can remain six years."

There is a widespread belief that if Barclays' current term is extended to three years, Shah will be able to serve as BCCI secretary for a total of six years. This would position him to assume the role of ICC chairman in 2025 for a three-year term during his cooling-off period from BCCI. Subsequently, in 2028, he could return to take on the position of board president.
