Yuvraj Singh played 108 of his 278 ODI innings at No. 4. It was in this position that he scored his highest, and last, ODI century (150) against England in Cuttack in January 2017.
The No. 4 has become a much-debated spot, especially during India's build-up to the ongoing World Cup campaign. "It is being much talked about for two years," said Yuvraj on Monday.
"They (Indian team) did a lot of shuffling with No. 4. I have a lot to say but I won't say. I will just say that whoever is No. 4, you need to back that guy, give him a lot of chance so that he has the confidence to play at No. 4.
"It is unfair to shuffle guys. If he doesn't perform, he will be out (of the team). KL (Rahul) was in very good form in IPL and is playing at No. 4. They should stick with him," Yuvraj said.
"Whoever is batting at No. 4 should be given the opportunity in the whole tournament and get the best out of him. It is a difficult position."
Yuvraj also reserved his comments on the YoYo test that the BCCI uses to assess players' fitness before tours. "I have a lot to say but not saying it right now because India is playing the World Cup. I don't want any controversies around the players as I want them to be in the best space," he said.
Instead, Yuvraj was told by the BCCI that if he failed a YoYo test, he would be given a farewell international.
"I did not ask anyone in BCCI for a final match. If I was good, I would enter the ground. I don't like playing that way. I was told that 'If you don't pass YoYo test, you can play retirement match'. I told them I don't want retirement match, and that I will pass YoYo test and return home," Yuvraj said.
He also had some advice for the youngsters. "I see a lot of money, especially among the youngers guys in IPL. It's hard to control them. I see them getting money a bit too easy. When you talk to them, they don't listen. Twenty years back, I was also not listening. It is very important that they focus on playing for India and in Ranji Trophy. These days, the youngsters are not focusing on playing four-day cricket because money is there in T20," said Yuvraj who had a roaring success in 304 ODIs but not replicate the same in the 40 Tests he played.
