Team India let the advantage slip in the third of the four-match Test series against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium as they were bowled out for just 145 runs in the first innings. Resuming their innings on the overnight score of 99/3, the England spinners Jack Leach and skipper Joe Root wreaked havoc on the hosts as they took seven wickets for just 46 runs in the first session to dismiss India with a lead of just 33 runs.
Rohit Sharma continued on his merry run on the score of 57 and Ajinkya Rahane started slowly but they did have a start. However, it was Jack Leach's turn to turn the things in England's favour on the turning pitch.
Leach first removed Rahane, trapping him in front of the wickets. And, in the next over he did the same with Rohit Sharma. Sharma was dismissed after a brilliant 66. After his wicket, it was just a collapse as apart from Ravichandran Ashwin, no other Indian batsman could offer any resistance with the bat.
After Leach's twin strikes, it was time for skipper Root to join the action. Root first sent back wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, getting him caught behind. Washington Sundar and Ashwin delayed the inevitable as Sundar was clean bowled by Root for a duck.
Axar Patel went for a duck in the same over, trying to hit Root out of the attack. Ashwin played a few shots but went home after attempting a slow sweep. Ishant Sharma hit the first six of the Indian innings and tried to get some bonus runs for the team, but in the end, it was Root, who had the last laugh.
Root, who was 3/0 at one point ended up with figures of 5/8, the cheapest five-wicket haul by a spinner taking over former Australian spinner Tim May, who had figures of 5/9.
