Team India kept their rampaging form with the ball going as they had the visitors four down even before the first session ended. After removing the opener Dom Sibley and Jonny Bairstow quickly, England formed a decent partnership with Zak Crawley and skipper Joe Root.
Crawley, in particular, was the aggressive one as he smashed the bowlers around to bring up his fifty in just 68 balls. However, the Indian spinners weren't far off from the wickets as the ball was turning square,
First Ravichandran Ashwin trapped Root in front of the wickets as the ball was turning in, while Axar Patel got Crawley on a straighter delivery. England were 81/4 at the end of the first session and after a short rebuild, they were pegged back by the Indian spinners.
Earlier, England had won the toss and chose to bat in the Day-night Test. While England made four changes getting James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow and Zak Crawley back in the line-up, India made one more change apart from Kuldeep as pacer Jasprit Bumrah was back in the side at the expense of Mohammed Siraj.
The fast-bowler Ishant Sharma, who is playing his 100th Test match provided the first breakthrough for the hosts as he dismissed the opener, Dom Sibley, for a duck. England didn't recover from that blow, local boy Axar Patel pegged them again dismissing Jonny Bairstow for another duck as England were reduced to 27/2.
