India vs New Zealand: Another match, another record; King Kohli surpasses Brian Lara to enter top-10 ODI run-getters

Virat Kohli broke into top-10 One-Day International (ODI) run-getters of all time during the first ODI between India and New Zealand on Wednesday.

Kohli was 21 runs away from surpassing West Indian great Brian Lara for the record and he achieved that during India's chase of 157 at the McLean Park, Napier. 

King Kohli is now No. 10 on the runs charts of the ODIs behind leader Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Kallis, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. 

Kohli needs 400-odd runs to surpass India's Wall, Dravid to No. 9. 

Earlier in the day, Shikhar Dhawan became the second fastest Indian to 5,000 One-Day International (ODI) runs, in terms of the number of innings. 

Dhawan, who needed 118 innings to reach the landmark, beat former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly (126 innings). Virat Kohli remains the fastest Indian to 5K ODI runs as he achieved it in 114 innings. 

The Indian opener Dhawan has levelled with West Indian legend, Brian Lara, who also reached 5K ODI runs in 118 innings.

In the bowling department, fast bowler Mohammed Shami made a significant record. When he dismissed Martin Guptill in the first innings, he became the fastest Indian to 100 ODI wickets. 

Shami, who took 56 ODIs to get to 100 wickets, bettered Irfan Pathan's 59 matches. 

While Shami equalled New Zealand pacer Trent Boult (56 ODIs) in his record of fastest Indian to 100 ODI wickets, he surpassed Pakistan's legend Waqar Younis (59 ODIs) and South African spinner Imran Tahir (58 ODIs)
