From Bollywood references to a restaurant with the same name, fans found innovative ways to react to the Punjab franchise's new name ahead of IPL 2021

Another year and another team takes the rebranding route and this time, it's the turn of the Punjab franchise. Teams like Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rising Pune Supergiant and recently the Delhi Capitals have been on the rebranding route before changing the name, logo, or both in the past. So like Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab has become a thing of the past.

The Mohali-based franchise will be called, Punjab Kings from now on. Talking about rebranding, Punjab Kings CEO, Satish Menon said, "Punjab Kings is a more evolved brand name, and we understand it was a right time for us to move focus on the core brand itself. The change in brand identity is not about changing our brand ethos but celebrating our one-ness as we stand in unit like a family. The new logo honors the liveliness and vibrancy of the brand and provides modern elements, while we stand out from rest of the teams.”

The owner of the team, Preity Zinta, along with skipper KL Rahul and explosive opener Chris Gayle will be meeting virtually later in the day to publicly unveil the logo and the name.

But, little did they know that the name will inspire hilarious memes as the fans haven't liked the new name. The minute change of dropping 'XI' from the name and interchanging the remaining two words doesn't contribute much to rebranding as per the fans and the initials PK have inspired another flurry of memes as it coincides with the 2014 Bollywood film by the same name starring Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput.

Here are some of the reactions:
