The deputy chief of Japan's Olympic Committee, Kozo Tashima, confirmed on Tuesday (March 17) that he has been tested positive for the coronavirus.

This has raised fresh doubts over whether Tokyo is safe enough to be hosting the Summer Games later this year.

"Today, my test result showed positive for the new coronavirus," Tashima said in a statement, issued via the Japan Football Association.

Tashima also claimed that since February 28 he was on a business trip, first heading to Belfast to attend the yearly general meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

From March 2 onwards, he visited Amsterdam for a UEFA meeting to head a presentation on Japan's bid for the women's 2023 FIFA World Cup.

On March 3, he again attended a general meeting of UEFA.

"In Amsterdam and in Europe in early March, the level of nervousness against the novel coronavirus was not the same as now. Everyone was still doing hugs, handshakes and bises (cheek kissing)," he said in the statement.

All major football competitions like La Liga, Premier League, Champions League, Ligue 1, and Serie A have been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday (March 13) declared that the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic has moved from China, where new cases reported have drastically decreased, to Europe, where most countries are seeing a climb in infections and fatalities.

The rapid spread of Coronavirus worldwide has started seeing its serious impacts. With over 114 cases in India only, many sporting events have either been canceled or postponed.

The global infected count stands at over 160,000 with the death toll because of the virus has gone beyond 6,000 internationally.
