Pant's poor shot selection while batting has resulted in people raising questions if the player is too careless to play for India or not.

Former India captain Kapil Dev has expressed his thoughts over the 21-year-old and suggested him to take it slow at the start of his innings.

“For me, he must wait to feel the sweet touch of the ball on the bat. What is the hurry? He has the ability and calibre. It is the temperament that he needs to work on,” he said.

“There is a thin line between failure and success. You connect the shot and you are a hero. You don’t then the same shot becomes your nemesis. Tough choice to make but a choice has to be made before it is too late,” he added.

Virender Sehwag, former India cricket, has also voiced his opinion about how he failed to succeed in the first 20 innings but the support from the team management definitely boosted his confidence.

“I flopped in 20 innings before I scored but then I had the support of the team management. I could regain form because of that support without changing my game,” he said.

While discussing Pant’s shot selection, Sehwag said, “I think Pant should also look to become a performer (like MS Dhoni). He should concentrate on his shot selection. He has awesome talent and if he improves his shot selection, I am sure he will serve India for the next 15 years.”

Pant's record in Test cricket has been decent, scoring 754 runs in just 10 matches with an average of 44.35. But in limited-overs cricket, he has managed to score only 229 runs in 12 ODIs to go with 325 runs in 20 T20Is.
