Shubman Gill’s first coach and biggest cheerleader is his father Lakhwinder Singh, who realized his own dream of pursuing cricket through his son, and recognized Gill’s talent at a very young age. Here is all you need to know about the star player’s father.

Lakhwinder Singh and his family belong to the Fazilka village in Punjab, and are of the Jatt Sikh descent. Singh is an agriculturalist and provided for his family through farming. However, he had an aspiration to become a cricketer but couldn’t pursue the sport because of family responsibilities.

While he couldn’t fulfill his dreams, he decided to make Shubman Gill a celebrated cricketer. He prompted Shubman to pick up a bat at the age of 3, and acted as his first ever coach before he started playing for the U-16 and U-19 team.

Shubman Gill’s father made a makeshift cricket pitch on his farm and asked his helpers to bowl for the Indian batter. He also offered his helpers a Rs 100 reward if they were able to take Shubman’s wicket, a feat which not many could achieve.

When Lakhwinder Singh was convinced that his son was destined for a great career as a cricketer, he decided to leave his farm and village and rent a house in Mohali, close to the iconic Mohali Stadium. Shubman’s father used to make Shumban play 500-700 balls per day to polish his cricket skills.

Shubman Gill’s exemplary performance in the India vs Pakistan match got Rohit Sharma’s squad the much needed win in Asia Cup 2023.
