1983 World Cup

37 years after India's ionic and monumental victory over West Indies, a picture of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team's payslip has gone viral online.

The 1983 World Cup - a tournament that changed the face of Indian cricket. The victory over champions West Indies at the Lord's cricket ground filliped the country, elevating the sport to religion for fans with every child wanting to become a cricketer. Now, 37 years after that ionic and monumental victory, picture of the 83 World Cup-winning Indian team's payslip went viral online.

India defeated West Indies in the finals by 43 runs. The Windies had won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Kapil Dev-led side managed to score just 183 runs as Andy Roberts took three wickets while Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, and Larry Gomes picked up two wickets each.

For India, Kris Srikkanth top-scored as he played a knock of 38 runs, apart from him, no other batsmen managed to go past the 30-run mark.

Defending 183, India did a good job of keeping a check on the Windies run flow and Madan Lal then dismissed the key batsmen Vivian Richards (33), reducing Windies to 57/3.

Soon after, the team from the Caribbean was reduced to 76/6 and India was the favorites from there on to win the title. Mohinder Amarnath took the final wicket of Michael Holding to give India its first-ever World Cup title win.

In the finals, West Indies was bowled out for 140, and as a result, India won the match by 43 runs.

Former Pakistan skipper Ramiz Raja, earlier this year, had posted a picture of the payslip of players where the entire team, along with the manager, were getting paid a match fee of Rs 1500 and 600 daily allowances during the World Cup 1983.

"Had to reproduce this... will try to get a copy of what we got paid for the Indian tour in 86-87. I remember it to this date what I got: played 5 Tests and 6 ODI’s and got paid Rs 55000," he wrote on Twitter.

India's World Cup final playing XI included Sunil Gavaskar, K Srikkanth, Mohinder Amarnath, Yashpal Sharma, SM Patil, Kapil Dev (c), Kirti Azad, Roger Binny, Madan Lal, Syed Kirmani, and Balwinder Sandhu.
