Rishabh Pant scored his maiden test century on Tuesday as he and KL Rahul defied India to give some hope of winning the fifth and final test match against England.
Pant, who batted positively from the start in this innings, reached his century with a six. He took 117 balls to reach the milestone at The Oval.
It was the best innings by an Indian wicketkeeper batsman in England. Pant went past MS Dhoni who held the record with 92 runs at the same ground in 2007. Pant also surpassed Dhoni's 76 not out at Lord's in 2007 to register the highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper in the fourth innings of a test match.
India were 298 for five in their second innings while chasing a mammoth 464-run target at tea on the final day of the fifth cricket Test against England here on Tuesday.
KL Rahul was batting on 142, while giving him company was Rishabh Pant on 101 at the break.
India still require 166 runs for an improbable win with five wickets in hand.
