Virat Kohli and Co. made sure to clinch the ODI title against top-ranked team England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. While leading the Men in Blue towards victory, Kohli became the third captain to lead India in 200 international matches.
Kohli, who became India's captain in all formats of the game in January 2017, led India for the 200th time on Sunday. He thus joins his predecessor MS Dhoni and Mohammad Azharuddin as the only players to have led India in 200 international matches.
While Azharuddin had led India in 221 matches, Dhoni led India in 332 matches. Dhoni retired from Test cricket in December 2014 after which Kohli became India's captain in the longest format of the game.
Dhoni then resigned from limited-overs captaincy in January 2017, thus handing over the reins to Kohli in all formats, before eventually from international cricket in August 2020. Azharuddin, meanwhile, had succeeded Krishnamachari Srikanth from 1989 until 1999.
The win against England was Virat Kohli's 128th win as an Indian captain. He equalled Stephen Fleming to attain the joint-fifth spot in the list.
As for the clash, in the 3rd and final ODI, the visiting side won the toss and had decided to field first. India posted a total of 329 runs in the first innings with the help of fifties from Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya.
In response, England fought well but lost the nail-biter. They managed to score 322/9 in 50 overs thanks to Sam Curran's unbeaten 95.
Shardul Thakur and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were the most successful bowlers for India picking up 4 and 3 wickets respectively. Curran was adjudged as the player of the match for his wonderful knock.
