The tragic news of the untimely death of former Sri Lankan cricketer Dhammika Niroshana, aged 41, has shocked the community. Niroshana was fatally shot at his residence in Ambalangoda, a small town in the Galle district, on Tuesday night (July 16), as reported by local media.

Local authorities have disclosed that Niroshana was in the company of his wife and two children when an unidentified assailant opened fire on him. The suspect remains at large, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to uncover the motive behind this heinous crime.

Niroshana, a talented right-arm fast bowler and proficient batter, was highly regarded during his playing career. He showcased his skills in 12 first-class matches and 8 List A games for the Galle Cricket Club between 2001 and 2004, amassing over 300 runs and claiming 19 wickets.

His promising career began with the Sri Lankan U19 team in 2000, where he competed in under-19 Test and ODI matches for two years. Notably, Niroshana led the Sri Lankan U19 squad in 10 matches, guiding future stars such as Farveez Maharoof, Angelo Mathews, and Upul Tharanga, who later represented Sri Lanka at the international level.

Despite his potential, Niroshana's career trajectory faced setbacks, and he played his final competitive cricket match in December 2004.
