Watch: Shikhar Dhawan reveals story behind 'Gabbar', recalls when he was about to quit cricket

Shikhar Dhawan is known for a touch guy on the field and a sweetheart off it. The Indian opener is known as 'Gabbar' to his fans. 

Dhawan revealed that his nickname has become so popular that no body calls him Shikhar anymore during the matches. 

Talking to Gaurav Kapur on his web series Breakfast with Champions, Dhawan revealed the story behind his nickname. He revealed that Vijay Dahiya, his former Delhi captain, gave him the nickname. 

He was named 'Gabbar' because he used to say dialogues of the famous Bollywood villian during Ranji Games while fielding to keep his team's morale up. He also shared anecdotes from domestic cricket and admitted that more funny comments are passed more in the domestic encounters than international matches. 

Dhawan also revealed that he came very close to quitting cricket once. He said that there was a time early in his cricketing career when he thought it's over for him. He had even joined his father's business. But a slot opened in the team and his coach asked him to join back the team.  

Dhawan, who scored a world record century on his Test debut against Australia, said that the Champions Trophy in 2013 helped him consolidate his position in team. Dhawan went on to win the Golden Bat award and the player of the tournament.

Dhawan was joined for the conversation by wife Ayesha Mukherjee and son Jorawar. He called Ayesha his biggest strength. 

The Indian opener got married in 2012. Ayesha as a mother of two daughters, Rhea and Aliyah, from her previous marriage and it was a challenge for the 27-year-old Dhawan to take care of the kids at a young age. Shikhar said that he did well to overcome the challenge and now when he looks back it feels good.

Ayesha on the other hand said that she doesn't allow Shikhar to cook in her kitchen because of the mess he creates.
