AAP leader's procession against drug peddlers creates traffic jam in Delhi

Alka Lamba, called a procession after residents in Majnu ka Tila area alleged that some people in the locality have been dealing with drug peddlers.

The commuters on the roads leading from Majnu ka Tila to Rajghat had a harrowing time as roads were choked due to a procession called by political leaders against smack addicts in the north Delhi area. The kilometer-long jam forced traffic to move at a snail's speed.

The jam began after the Aam Aadmi Party and MLA from Chandni Chowk area, Alka Lamba, called a procession after residents in Majnu ka Tila area alleged that some people in the locality have been dealing with drug peddlers. They alleged that there have been cases of youth losing their lives due to addiction to heroine.

The procession later led to a four-kilometer-long jam forcing commuters to wait for over four hours to get out of the jam. The jam, which started at about 12 pm, was a cause of trouble for commuters till about 5 pm.

"We had to take to Amritsar from Kashmere Gate ISBT, but because of the jam, we reached so late that our family decided to travel tomorrow," said Rakesh Singhvi, who missed his bus to Amritsar after the jam.

Lamba, during a Facebook live, highlighted the drug addiction issue that the residents of Majnu ka Tila and near by area have been dealing with. In the video, a resident of the area was also seen claiming that the beat officers have been taking bribe from smack peddlers to allow illegal business flourish in the area. After this, Lamba and her supporters blocked the roads with some children.

"Sustained action against drug-trafficking/abuse is a priority action-area of Delhi police. As regards, Majnu Ka Tilla area too, we are committed to take stringent legal action if anything incriminating comes to notice," said deputy commissioner of police, north, Nupur Prasad in a tweet.
