Work on 68,000 flats has already begun; officials say the flats will be bigger and have better facilities than the existing LIG flats

Even as the Delhi Development Authority's (DDA) 2017 housing scheme is due for the draw of lots this November, the urban body is all set to build 81,000 more flats in the Capital by 2021.

Senior officials said the flats will be bigger and have better facilities. Over 11,000 LIG flats from the 2014 housing scheme were returned for being too small and lacking basic civic amenities.

"This time, the LIG flats will be in the range of 42-60 square meters, as against the 33 square meters as in the previous schemes,"an official said.

DDA, the government's housing body, has mapped these flats in the first phase of its scheme of making 1 lakh flats over five years. The scheme was announced by former union minister for urban development (MoUD), Venkaiah Naidu, on June 30, while launching the 2017 housing scheme. The flats were announced under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to offer affordable housing in the city.

"Of the total 81,000, we have already started work on 68,000 flats in different areas. Most of these are spread across outer Delhi and southwest areas. These are houses that we had conceptualised earlier and had already found land for. When the scheme was announced, construction on these had already begun,"the official said.

Besides, the housing department is preparing a layout for 13,000 more flats. The flats on offer will cater mostly to the low and middle-income groups. A small number will be in the high-income category.
