Delhi: Tractor set ablaze at India gate to protest against farm legislations; 5 detained

The incident happened at around 7:30 am today when the group of unknown men carrying posters of Bhagat Singh reached the India Gate shouting slogans against the government.

In a major development, a group of 15-20 men reached Rajpath near the India Gate in Delhi and set a tractor on fire. The vehicle was set ablaze to protest against the farm legislations. According to the latest development in the case, Delhi Police has now detained 5 accused for burning tractor at India Gate. 

For the uninformed, the incident happened at around 7:30 am today when the group of unknown men carrying posters of Bhagat Singh reached the India Gate shouting slogans against the government. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot for dousing the fire. 

"Around 15- 20 persons gathered here [India Gate] and tried to set a tractor on fire. The fire has been doused off and a tractor was also removed. Those involved are being identified. Probe underway," DCP New Delhi was quoted by news agency ANI as saying.

The incident comes in wake of nationwide protests by farmers against the farm legislations that were enacted after President Ram Nath Kovind signed them on Sunday.

In a related development, days after farmers across the country organised a 'Bharat Bandh', organisations in Karnataka have called for a state-wide shutdown on Monday to protest against the agricultural produce market committee (APMC) and land reforms acts introduced by the state government.

The call for bandh has gathered support from political parties including the Congress and JD(S), pro-Kannada outfits, and several labour organisations.

Transportation services are likely to be affected as taxi, auto rickshaw drivers, private bus drivers and goods transporters have expressed solidarity with the protests.

Many labour organisations including the Peace Auto and Taxi Association, Bharath Vehicles drivers’ Union, Ola, Uber and Taxi for Sure Owners and Drivers Association, Lorry Owners Association and others have announced their support to the farmers by halting their services for a day on Monday.
