The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has been intensifying its swachhta activities under the ongoing "Swachhta Hi Sewa" fortnight. A quiz competition on swachhta for the students and commissioning of a pit for preparation of compost were two major activities taken up on Wednesday.
Over 10,000 students of Class 4 and 5 of SDMC schools on Wednesday took part in an informative quiz competition, where 143 schools under the Central Zone participated. The students displayed their interest in swachhta related issues and were looking eager to know more about the relevance of cleanliness.
A compost pit was also made functional at Tagore Garden in the presence of local Councilor Shri Balram Kumar Oberai and Senior Officers of the DEMS department. Shri Oberai said it is simple and easy to prepare compost manure with wet waste by digging a pit and putting all such waste in it and keeping it covered for a month. The compost prepared is useful for parks, fields, and pots. This helps in managing wet waste better and saves the city from the filth strewn at public places too, he said.
A number of workshops on waste segregation, focusing on source segregation of waste were also organised in various wards under the four zones. Senior DEMS officials informed the participants about the importance and relevance of source segregation and its planned collection.
The official said: "More segregation amounts to reduced visibility of the waste. Source segregation is also mandatory for recycling."
A large number of RWA representatives, including women, took part in the workshops.
Apart from these, special sanitation drives were undertaken at Defence Colony, Nehru Place, Central Market, Lajpat Nagar, Daryaganj, Kotla Mubarakpur, Green Park, Sarvpriya Vihar, Vasant Vihar, RK Puram, Bharthal Village, Prachin Shiv Mandir Najafgarh, Sector-4 Dwarka, Samalkha, Chhawla, Subhash Nagar, Janak Puri, and Tilak Nagar.
