Two women were rewarded by the Delhi Police for showing exemplary courage and thwarting snatchers who tried to attack them in separate incidents in East Delhi's Shahdara area.
Ranjana, 29, had on April 6 gone to the Punjab National bank along with her mother to withdraw Rs 30,000. "After collecting the money from the bank, my mother and I stood on the side and were counting it when a man approached us and stated that the bundle of Rs 100 notes could be fake. As I kept two of the bundles in the bag the man tried to snatch the money in the hand," she said in her complaint.
According to the police, she caught hold of the accused by his collar and dragged him inside the ATM. Ranjan then locked the door of the ATM while the accused had no option but no stay inside. The accused identified as Akbar even pretended to be ill but the woman did not let him go and called up the police.
The second incident occurred the following day when 36-year-old Rinki was on her way to the Metro station in the afternoon in an e-rickshaw. Rinki was talking on the phone when two men on a motorcycle came next to the rickshaw and tried to snatch her phone. Rinki pulled down the pillion rider and the rider lost the balance and the bike fell down. The police were informed and the two accused identified as Sheikh Rojab and Idrish were arrested.
"The accused persons have a previous criminal record. Both the women showed great presence of mind and courage to fight back the attackers. I appeal to the general public to also come forward and help if anyone is trying to fight back attackers," said Nupur Prasad, DCP, Shahdara.
