Delhi police releases photos of 70 suspects in Jamia violence, announces rewards to informers
All of them are said to have participated in riots during the anti-CAA protests in Jamia Nagar.
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has released photographs of 70 people who were allegedly involved in the Jamia violence that broke out during protests against the Citizenship amendment act (CAA) on December 15, 2019.
The police has also announced rewards to those giving informations about the suspects and asked people to call on 011-23103918 and 9750871252. All of them are said to have participated in riots during the anti-CAA protests in Jamia Nagar.
On December 17, ten people were arrested in connection with the riots. However, the police confirmed that the arrested individuals were not students and had a criminal background.
A day earlier, the police had filed an FIR against 15 people in connection with the conflict, during the course of which agitators had allegedly set ablaze four buses near New Friends Colony. At least six policemen, two fire brigade personnel, and several students had been injured in the clashes. The police said that they were naming individuals in the FIR, lodged at the New Friends Colony (NFC) and Jamia Nagar police stations after attempting to identify them via video footage. According to sources, the Crime Branch is to conduct an investigation into the matter.
Violent clashes broke out on December 15, 2019, between the police and students of Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), who were marching towards the Parliament to protest against the Citizenship law. According to reports, police resorted to lathi-charge and teargas shells were fired to stop them. At least 50 protesters were said to detained by the police.
A day later, the police allegedly entered the university campus and fired tear gas inside the library. Videos sent by students to DNA showed students rushing out of the smoke-filled library reading hall and disarrayed chairs. University Chief Proctor Waseem Ahmed Khan said staff and students were beaten up and forced to leave the campus by the police.
Several students were detained by the police following the conflict on Jamia campus. Both students and police personnel, including senior officials, were injured.
