DU admissions: Colleges release first cut-offs

Delhi University colleges on Friday released their first cut-off lists for admissions to various undergraduate courses. There was a considerable drop in the cut-offs of most courses, including English (Honours), B Com (H) and Economics (H), from last year.

Surprisingly, the cut-off Humanities was slightly higher than Commerce and Science with the highest for Political Science (Honours) at SGTB Khalsa College at 99 per cent followed by Psychology (Honours) at Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College at 98.5 per cent. SGTB Khalsa again recorded the highest in Science and Commerce courses for BSc ( Electronics) at 99.6 per cent and BCom (Honours) at 98 per cent.

According to University officials, the poor results of state boards, including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, led to the drop in cut-offs this year. "This year, the university has kept in mind the students of state boards who don't score as much as those from CBSE," a senior official said.

Explaining the surge in the Humanities cut-off, he said, "This was predictable as most of the top scorers across the boards are from Humanities."

The cut-off for Economics (H) and B.Com (H) at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) settled at 97.75 per cent. This was slightly lower for both the subjects from last year which was 98 and 98.25 percent respectively.

According to SRCC principal R P Rustagi, the cut-offs have been announced based on the number of applications received for these courses.

"This year, we announced the cut-offs after carefully examining the data provided by the university. Unlike last year, this year we will close the admissions in first two-three lists," he said. Last year, the college had released four lists with the last cut-off list being at around 97.25 percent.

Similarly cut-offs at Ramjas College also dropped for most subjects. For admission to B Com (H) and Economics (H) students will require more than 97.5 per cent. Both the subjects witnessed a drop of 1.75 percent and 1 per cent respectively from last year.

The cut-off for Chemistry (H) went down by 2 per cent in Ramjas from last year's 98 per cent to 96 per cent. "This year, we tried to set a very realistic cut-off, as last year we could not admit many students in the first cut-off list," said Ramjas Principal PC Tulsian.

The trend of cut-offs becoming lower continued at Hans Raj College as well, where most subjects either remained at the same percentage as last year or saw a dip of 0.25-1 percent.

The admission process for the first cut-off list will begin on Saturday and will continue till June 28. This year, DU received around 2.2 lakh applications for about 56,000 seats in its 63 colleges.

Earlier, the first cut-off was to release on June 20, but the university deferred it by four days due to some technical glitches on its admission portal.

Though the university had announced six cut-off lists in 2016, as of now, dates for only five have been announced. The second, third, fourth and fifth cut-offs will be announced on July 1, 7, 13, and 18 respectively.

Students who will qualify as per the cut-off can report to the respective college for document verification and approval of admission from Saturday. The timings for morning college will be 9:30 am to 1:30 pm and for evening college will be 4 pm to 7 pm. After approval of admission, a candidate can login to the university's admission portal to make an admission fee payment.
