The bereaved father of 7-year-old deceased Adya Singh, who died at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) during dengue treatment, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking urgent intervention to bring culprits to book. Singh, in the letter, has sought the license cancellation of the hospital while raising the issue of medical negligence and corruption in private medical colleges.

Jayant Singh’s letter to Modi states,“The license of the hospital has not been cancelled despite a conclusive report by the Haryana Medical Board. You will be shocked to know (this has been proved and recorded in the government report) that the hospital forged signatures of my wife and I on treatment consent forms. One of the Directors of this hospital offered to pay me Rs 35,00,000 to stay silent.”

Singh further alleged that the Medical Council of India (MCI) and similar state medical boards are not only corrupt in their functioning but completely ill-equipped to deal with rampant incidences of medical negligence. “India desperately needs a new medical regulator which deals exclusively with complaints of medical negligence and ethical infractions by hospitals,” his letter reads.

It further says,“Despite thirty lakh Indians dying each year due to medical negligence, the MCI has till date found only 146 doctors guilty.”

Singh later tweeted the grievance status of his complaint that had been forwarded by the Prime Minister’s Office to Under Secretary (Public) Ambuj Sharma. Sharma’s remarks on the complaint stated:“Closed (No action required).”
