In a tragic incident, six people died on Tuesday after inhaling poisonous gas emitted from an angithi (wooden stove) kept inside a closed room in southwest Delhi’s Cantt area.
According to the police, the six deceased have been identified as Amit, Pankaj, Anil all are residents of Rudarpur District in Uttar Pradesh. While the remaining three Kamal, Awadh Lal and Deep Chand were from Nepal.
All the deceased were currently residing in Chander Vihar in Nangloi.
The deaths came to light when in the afternoon the supervisor reached the spot and found them in an unconscious state, and reported the matter to the police. Four of the six persons were declared dead on arrival by the hospital while the other two succumbed during treatment.
According to the police, it was around 1.30 pm that a PCR call was received reporting four people have been found unconscious in Delhi Cantt area. “The PCR call was made by one Nirmal Singh, supervisor of a catering contractor namely Gurpreet Singh. The catering items were shifted from a function site at Mall Road in Delhi Cantt on Tuesday. In the catering items, there was also a tandoor which still had some heated or burned coals. The deceased had reached the site for today’s function and were taking rest in the room which got filled with gases,” said a senior police officer.
Police also said, prima facie it appears that the deaths occurred due to suffocation in the room. Further investigation is under process, police informed.
