Mayank Singhvi, the husband of Anissia Batra, who had allegedly committed suicide by jumping off from the third floor of her building in South Delhi's Panchsheel park was arrested by the police on Monday evening. Batra is the daughter of a retired Major General and worked as a flight attendant with a German airline.
Mayank was initially asked to join the investigations and was questioned for an hour after which he was arrested. Earlier in the day, the police had issued a lookout circular (LOC) in order to make sure the accused is available for investigation. Investigating officials said that Annisia before taking the extreme step had texted her husband that she was taking the extreme step and he can watch her go away. Mayank then rushed to her terrace but the door was locked from the inside. He broke the net on the window on the side and opened the door but she had already jumped by then. In another message sent to one of her friends she asked her to call the police and stated that 'he could kill her'.
The couple was having fights after Annisia had sold off one of the properties she owned in the Vasant Kunj area. On Friday as well they had an argument over this issue.
The post-mortem examination was again conducted by a board of doctors and videographed on Monday. "The BMW car of the alleged, diamond ring of the deceased and mobile phones of both were seized by the police. The forensics team inspected the house and recreated the sequence of events. The bank account details of the alleged and deceased have been sought and the same will be seized," said Romil Baaniya, DCP South.
Annisia's family members said that Mayank would often thrash her. The family had last month also complained to the police about the domestic violence. The couple got married on February 23, 2016. Since the marriage was less than seven years the SDM will conduct the inquiry.
Nillum Batra (67), Anissia's mother alleged that Mayank had not informed them about his previous marriage and the divorce. "The couple had gone to Dubai for their honeymoon a week after their wedding. On the second day of their honeymoon, he thrashed her black and blue. She was constantly messaging me and I asked her to move into another room in order to save herself. The next day she went to her friend's house from where she flew back to India," said Nillum.
