According to the police, the accident took place around 7.15 am on Monday when the victim Varnita, who works as a dietician at a hospital in Pushp Vihar got down from a bus and was crossing the main road to reach her work place.

A 26-year-old dietician was mowed down by two SUVs which were apparently racing early morning on Monday near Saket in south Delhi, leaving the woman critical. Delhi Police on Thursday traced down the driver of one of the SUVs and arrested a 40-year-old woman from Saket.

According to the police, the accident took place around 7.15 am on Monday when the victim Varnita, who works as a dietician at a hospital in Pushp Vihar got down from a bus and was crossing the main road to reach her work place.

"Two other men, employees of the same hospital, who got down from the same bus told police that when they were crossing the road, two SUVs, a Scorpio and an XUV, were approaching them. They said that both the cars were being driven roughly. Before they could ask Varnita to step back, the XUV hit her and threw her more than 20 feet up in the air. As she fell on the road, the Scorpio driver could not control the speed of the car and ran over her. They rushed her to the hospital where she was admitted for treatment," said a senior police officer.

Since the witnesses had noted the registration number of the Scorpio, police traced the car and arrested a 40-year-old woman, identified as Preeti Singh, who was allegedly driving the car at the time of accident. The XUV car is however yet to be traced and the police are checking CCTV footages from the vicinity to identify the vehicle. Police said that Varnita, the sole breadwinner of her family, is on ventilator and in a critical state.
