Senior Residents at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital called off the strike, where emergency services were disrupted for several hours after Medical Director himself went to the police station to register an Institutional FIR. The strike ended at 4 PM, after seven hours of the shutdown of medical services, which affected patient care.
The doctors went on this strike after a junior resident doctor at the hospital was beaten-up by the relatives of a patient on Sunday. On Saturday night, a 21-year-old woman was brought in the emergency for having breathlessness issues and was accompanied by 15 relatives. Due to no vacant incubator, she was put on an ambu bag for manual ventilation, which got the relatives angry. The relatives then assaulted the doctor who on duty causing deep bruises on his neck.
No institutional FIR has been lodged in the case as of now."This has become a routine now where patients and relatives walk in and beat up a doctor. There is no way that a doctor can work in such hostile environment. This is insensitive on the employer's side to not even lodge an institutional FIR. If they do not file one by tomorrow 9 am, we will shut all the services at the hospital and go on strike," said Dr Gursimar Singh, senior resident, DDU hospital.
In a long meeting, after the strike called off, the hospital has agreed to the demands of the senior residents for higher security.
In another case, doctors at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute have gone on a strike too demanding implementation of seventh pay commission.
