Two sisters have been arrested for kidnapping a one-month-old baby girl from East Delhi's Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital on Tuesday. One of the sisters kidnapped the child as she was unable to conceive despite being married for four years.
On April 17, the police officials were informed about the kidnapping of a child from the hospital. On reaching the hospital, 38-year-old Sumit informed the police that he was standing in a queue at the hospital while his wife was sitting near the staircase with their baby girl. The mother of the girl wanted to use the restroom and the accused women offered to keep the baby with them until she returned.
When the woman came out of the washroom neither the women nor the baby could be seen. Several teams were formed and during the investigation, all the CCTV footages of the hospital were checked. "In of the footages, two women moving about in a suspicious manner was spotted rushing towards the exit. They were also seen calling out to an auto driver. The auto drivers who operate in the area were scanned and questioned. The auto drivers told the police that the women had left the hospital in the auto driven by one Azad.
On the instance of Azad, the police reached the Khoda colony area where Azad had dropped the two. Searches were carried out at various houses and the accused women were found on the second floor of a building. The baby was also rescued from the house.
"The accused Poonam (22) and Ruchi (19) are siblings and hail from Etawa in Uttar Pradesh. Poonam informed the police that she could not have a child even after 4 years of marriage. They went to the hospital where they found the woman with her baby girl. Poonam and Ruchi approached the woman and started playing with the child. The mother who was exhausted waiting at the hospital since morning for her child's check-up trusted these strangers and handed over the infant to them to freshen up and get water. As soon as she left, the two women fled with the child and went home," said Pankaj Kumar Singh, DCP, East.
