The ministry said that strict action will be taken against its management committee for doing so without consent.

Amid the reports of Delhi University's Dyal Singh College's name being quietly changed to 'Vande Mataram College', both the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry and the university denied the claims. The ministry said that strict action will be taken against its management committee for doing so without consent.

"We had earlier also asked them to reconsider the move. We will not allow the college to be renamed. If there are two Dyal Singh colleges, they can call them A and B or 1 and 2 to differentiate but the original name cannot be changed," said HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar.

He said that the ministry will take action against the college management committee for going ahead with the renaming despite him making a statement in Parliament that it cannot be done.

Delhi University also released a statement saying, "Some newspapers have published a false misleading information about the change of the name of Dyal Singh (Evening) College. It is hereby clarified that the University of Delhi has not changed the name."

The controversy had erupted last year with various sections vehemently opposing the move to rename the college. However, Javadekar had rejected the proposal.
