Single parents have to go through a lot in order to raise their children. From being judged by peers and families, they face a lot of difficulties in everyday life. Sometimes, even schools refuse admission to single parents’ children, especially mothers. But now, no school in Delhi can deny admission to a child raised by a single parent.
In a major development, the Delhi government has finally put an end to the struggle against discrimination and has ordered schools to not deny admission to children with a single parent.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday announced, “No school in Delhi shall deny admission to a child on the grounds that the child is declaring the name of his/her single parent only.”
The education department released a circular which stated, “All the Heads of schools of all managements under DoE are hereby directed to not deny admission to the candidates who have filled details of even one of the parents in the application form while taking admission.”
Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia posted this circular on Twitter, which was well received by the people. Delhiites happily responded to the announcement.
Twitter handle @Kepler_22 replied, “I can relate this. Have only mom since when i was 10. Got difficulty in many govt certificates. This should be unabled in almost everything specially schools and exam related forms.”
While, another user @MooseJattana said, “Personally hits very close to home. I was denied covid tests in Punjab this time around unless I entered in the form “Father/Husbands” name, and since I have neither - I was told to go elsewhere. Inclusive decision and much, much, much needed!”
