Schools claim they are yet to receive the reimbursement for RTE students of previous years

Eleven schools falling under the South Mumbai Education Department have received a derecognition notice if the schools continue to deny admissions to students under the 25 per cent Right to Education (RTE) quota this year. The education department has noticed that several schools are denying RTE admissions to students. Meanwhile, not receiving reimbursement for previous students admitted under the same quota is the reason cited by the schools for the denial of admission.

After receiving a number of complaints from parents seeking admission under the RTE quota, the South Mumbai Education Department issued the notice to 11 schools on Tuesday, most of which are from Mumbai zone.

The notice states that it has been observed that parents are complaining that schools are denying admissions for not receiving reimbursement of previous years. The schools were asked to share the details of a separate bank account for the reimbursement which was asked to be made and sent to the department. The reimbursement for students that took admission from 2014-2015 has reached the deputy director of school education office and will be disbursed within a day or two.

BB Chavhan, education inspector, South Mumbai Education Department said, "We have served a notice to 11 schools for denying admission to students under the RTE quota after complaints from parents. The reimbursement based on which schools are denying admissions have come to the deputy director's office and will be disbursed within two days. Reimbursement of Rs 12 lakh is to be given to the schools in south Mumbai area. We will request schools to immediately give admissions to students before the deadline is over and simultaneously we will give reimbursements also."

Activity High School at Peddar Road is one of the schools that received the notice. However, Perin Bagli, principal of the school claimed that the school had not received any notice yet. Subodh Anand, Campus Manager, Edubridge International School in Grant Road, another school that was on the list, said, "We have not received any notice yet and we have received only one student under RTE quota till now. We have already given admission to that child."
