Professor Neela Dabir, Dean, TISS School of Vocational Education (SVE), talks about the things you need to keep in mind before signing up for a vocational course
It's all about you: You need to identify what you'd like to do for a living. There's no point working in the healthcare industry, if you can't stand the smell of medicine, just as you won't be able to survive on the factory floor if you're not fond of intense physical activity. Aptitude tests may not be available for everything, so it's advisable to speak to people who are already working in the industry that you are considering entering to understand what it involves and if you are really up for it.
Stay tuned for practical experience: Check if the course you are applying for offers on-the-job training. What sets vocational courses apart from traditional courses is that they tend to offer hands-on experience. In the courses that TISS offers, students attend 12-hours of theory sessions combined with 4-5 days of on the job training every week. While this does not guarantee a job, it certainly enhances employability.
Steer clear of short-term courses: Short-term courses are effective post-graduation, as they help you build on your existing knowledge base. However, short-term courses done without graduation, may not add value to your career in the long run. If you are considering short term courses, do ensure that they are not too short to be of no value and that they are building up toward something bigger. Unlike traditional degrees, the three-year bachelor of vocation (BVoc) degree—introduced by the University Grants Commission at colleges and universities nationwide—offers multiple-exits; you can leave after the first year with a Diploma, after the second year with an Advanced Diploma and after the third year with a Bachelor's Degree in Vocational Education.
Analyse the local demand: Most vocational courses cater to a specific industry. The courses at TISS are demand-driven, which effectively means that unless there was already an industry associated with the course, to offer work-integration, the course wouldn't exist. In some instances, in addition to giving students a stipend for their work, the industry in also funds their education. This industry support and earn-as-you-learn model not only increases employablity, but also helps students who might not be able to afford to study further.
In case you intend to migrate, you'll need to check if the course you're considering is recognised abroad or if you will need to re-qualify as per that country's norms, after getting a basic degree here.
Do a background check: From dialysis technology to acting—there is no dearth of diversity in the courses on offer, but you need to check the credentials of the college or university you are applying, to figure out how much weight a vocational degree from that institute would have in the real world. Institutions such as TISS, tend to work with partners with expertise in specific arenas to ensure that the knowledge being imparted has high value.
