It is no less than a dream when a person becomes an IAS or IPS officer by clearing one of India’s most difficult exams, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam. With the passion to serve society, people become civil services. But in reality, there are only a few who actually work for the same and Pritpal Kaur is one of them. IPS officer Pritpal Kaur works quietly to transform the lives of people who live in India’s isolated areas.

Pritpal helps drug addicts and their families

2016-batch IPS officer Pritpal Kaur not only gives free coaching to needy students to prepare for the civil services exam. But also, she helps drug addicts and their families through counselling. Apart from this, being a dentist, she helps the local people to quit tobacco.

Pritpal was a dentist

Before becoming IPS, Pritpal Kaur was working as a dentist in Hyderabad. After cracking the civil services exam in 2016, she served in Nagaland's Tuensang district. In order to help students preparing for UPSC, she decided to reach out to them through social media. She then started taking classes along with some officers of police and civil administration.

Converted conference hall of the district's SP office into a classroom

Seven students under her coaching have cleared the state civil services exam prelims this year. She has converted the conference hall of the district's SP office into a classroom. There are about 30 candidates in her class and some of them are working who join the class from 6 am to 10 am. These teachers include some officers of the state civil service and doctors from the Assam Rifles. Their classes started last week.

Conducted classes to give direction

In a conversation with The New Indian Express, IPS Pritpal Kaur told, “Noklak shares a border with Myanmar and is, perhaps, the remotest district in the country. It lacks infrastructure. I thought I can take my time off in the morning and conduct classes to give them some direction in life."

Spends a part of her salary to buy study material for aspirants

Pritpal spends a part of her salary to buy the books which she gives to the aspirants. Students are also given study material and take regular tests. Now, these candidates are ready for Civil Services Exam as well as SSC, CAPF, Bank and State level departmental exams.

Hackling drug menace

Because of the district's proximity to international borders, drug addiction is also a problem in the area closer to the border with Myanmar. In such a situation, Pritpal has formed a squad to curb drug use, which includes community, NGOs and others. She says that love, care and empathy can beat addiction. She recently met over 100 drug addicts who are undergoing treatment. By counselling them, they are preparing them for rehab.
