In a surprising development, Sujal Singh, an 18-year-old, decided to give up his seat at IIT Delhi to pursue a B.Tech degree in Computer Science from Delhi Technological University (DTU). It is to be noted that Sujal Singh was offered Civil Engineering at IIT-Delhi but he wanted to follow his passion for computer science.
Sujal Singh father Balwant Singh sells towels near the Great India Place mall in Noida. Sujal Singh belongs to Aligarh but he has been living in Noida with his family as his father Balwant, 47, has been working as a street vendor in Noida for nearly three decades now.
“I knew my child was capable, he used to study all day. Sujal woke up early in the morning and studied till late at night. Whenever I would wake up at night to get water at about 2-3 am, he would still be studying. He never spent much time outside with friends also,” Balwant Singh was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
Sujal’s father struggles to earn even Rs 20,000 in a month but he is committed to give best education to Sujal, who is a student of Govt. Boys’ School at Mori Gate. Sujal scored 99.5 percentile in JEE mains after taking online classes with ‘Physics Wallah’ in grade 12.
“I never forced a career upon my kids, I want to see them excel at what they choose,” said Singh. Sujal’s sister is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Science in Delhi and is preparing for the UPSC examination. Sujal’s family has now shifted to a rented house at Bhajanpura in Delhi in order to make it easier for Sujal to go to DTU daily.
