10 romantic movies for every young heart in love
It’s a Boy Girl Thing
Love makes everything beautiful; the world becomes your wonderland, little joys leaving you enticed
Sometimes love lasts forever, and sometimes you find your forevers in a moment that can last a lifetime. True, sometime love does end in heartbreaks, especially young love. Regardless, whether it is the butterflies you feel in your stomach, or the anguish that burns your heart, these are times when you want to watch, read or listen to things that are relatable. Typically however, most often than not, movies narrate stories of mature love, almost ignoring the emotions and intensity of the young hearts. We have culled out some of our favourite teenage romance movies that are a must watch for everyone in love.
It’s a Boy Girl Thing
This movie affirms two age-old sayings A) Men are from Mars, and women are from Venus. B) Opposites attract. Woody and Nell, neighbours who go to the same high school, hate each other and are in constant dispute. They go on a school trip to a museum where they begin arguing in front of the statue of an ancient Aztec God. The statue casts a spell upon them, and swaps their souls. What follows next is a fun-ride of both trying to fit into each other’s world, sometimes fighting, at times adjusting and finally ending up as best friends who are in love.
Never Been Kissed
Made of everything relatable, this Drew Barrymore starrer proves some things are really worth the wait. Josie (Drew Barrymore), a journalist who has never been in a relationship is asked to report undercover at a high school, and falls in love with the English teacher, Sam. She reveals her true identity at the school prom leaving Sam hurt and infuriated. Hopeless, she returns to file her story where she mentions she has never been kissed and would wait in the middle of the baseball field for Sam to come and kiss her, and that is exactly how the movie ends…with a sweet long kiss.
Just My Luck
This is an American rom-com starring Lindsay Lohan (Ashley), who plays one of the luckiest girls in all of New York. However, life changes as she kisses an English band vocalist Jake, at a masquerade. The two keep meeting under varied circumstances and end up falling in love. Ashley realises that the only way to win her luck back would be to kiss it away from the love of her life.
Aquamarine
If fairy tales and magical creatures are your thing, Aquamarine is bound to become your favourite movie. Aqua, the mermaid, fights with her father refusing to agree to an arranged marriage and sets out to prove that love exists. Hailey and Claire chance upon Aqua and hit off like a house on fire, also helping her hook up with Raymond, their ‘forever crush’. A fantastic tale which proves that love doesn’t stop at romantic involvement, but extends to the realm of friendships too, this movie will leave you in happy tears.
A Cinderella Story
Though all the movies of this franchise are worth a watch, the first one starring Hillary Duff (Sam) is our favourite. A modern rendition of the fairy tale Cinderella, the story revolves around two internet friends who happen to meet each other in person at the school prom. Just like Cinderella, Sam too refuses to reveal her identity, given the different worlds the two belong to. But fate had a different design. The protagonist forgets her phone, which turns out to be the equivalent of the fairy tale glass slippers, helping the two lovers unite eventually.
Cruel Intentions
Not all love stories see a happy ending. Watch this movie with a pinch of salt as it gradually disrupts every mushy conception you had of love. A story of the kind of love that gets dowsed by lust, betrayal, back stabs and vindication, the story is much closer to the reality of the high school romance of wealthy teenagers, than most. Kathryn and Sebastian are step siblings involved in an incestuous affair. The story begins with Kathy asking Sebastian to seduce Annette, a rather docile and sweet girl, the ideal ‘virtuous’ kind. The story ends on a rather grim note, with Sebastian dying, Annette losing the love of her life (however, successful in exacting revenge), and Kathryn losing her reputation in school.
Flipped
Flipped is the story of a little girl hopelessly in love with a boy from his neighbourhood. Juli and Bryce go to the same school and literally grow up together in the course of the movie. The movie begins with the seven-year-old Juli describing the beauty of Bryce’s blue eyes. While her love remains unrequited for the longest time, Bryce eventually comes around. When the duo finally reach eighth standard, Bryce realizes he is in love with Juli too. This movie is typically made in a ‘he-said she-said’ style, with the protagonists alternately presenting their perspective.
Clueless
Set in Beverly Hills, this film is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma. The story revolves around Cher and Josh, her nerdy stepbrother, who constantly keeps finding faults in her superficial life. It takes the two a while to realise they are in love with each other. They eventually admit their feelings with a tender kiss. A perfectly sweet teen romance movie is what we would call it.
Chasing Liberty
The film is about the teenage daughter (Anna) of the President of the United States who rebels against the constant presence of secret agents in her life. Angered by the constant monitoring of her life, she flees to Europe looking for adventure and romance. While eluding her sentinels, Anna asks Ben to give her a ride on his bike, unaware of the fact that he was also an agent hired by her father. They two of them travel all of Europe and end up falling in love; Anna learning much later about Ben’s true identity.
10 Things I Hate About You
Great acting apart, Heath Ledger’s dimples are every reason why no one should miss out this high-school-romance movie. Based loosely on Shakespeare’s The taming of the shrew, the story talks about two sisters, Bianca and Kat, and their love lives. The father lays down a condition for Bianca — she would be allowed to date only if stoic and nerdy Kat finds herself a date too. Desperate to make things work, bad boy Patrick (Ledger) is paid off to convince Kat to date him, but the two end up falling in love. After a very bumpy ride of heart-breaks and tears, like every sweet teen romance ever, the love birds reconcile with a kiss.
