A rock music marathon

Rockathon is set to clock 100 hours of jamming in support of the hearing impaired.

Maybe, BB King wasn’t kidding when he wrote the lyrics “Rock me baby, rock me all night long.” In true fashion, E 18 is organising what is India’s first Rock Music Marathon between May 24 and May 29 at Planet M on Brigade Road.

Titled Virgin Mobile Rockathon, this event aims to have 100 hours of non-stop live music void of genres of music, language, and band size. The music will be streamed ‘live’ on a microsite, and a recording of a music will be put into a time capsule with messages by participating artistes and audiences to be opened 10 years later.

Some of the bands confirmed to be playing at this event include Allegro Fudge, Inner Sanctum, Eccentric Pendulum, Lounge Piranha, Bhoomi, Illiminati, Galeej Gurus, Swarathma, Todays Special, Schickados and Theorized from Bangalore, Infernal Wrath from Pune, Evergreen from Cochin and Themclones from New Delhi.

Speaking about the event, Gaurav Vaz, bass player for Allegro Fudge says, “I think Rockathon is a brilliant attempt at bringing a lot of well-deserved attention to the Indian indie-music scene.”

Abhishek Michael, bass player for metal band Inner sanctum says, “I guess if we are invited to be a part of this event, then we must be doing something right.”

The city, which has been starved of small-scale shows ever since the live music ban was imposed in pubs and clubs, will finally see Planet M open for 100 hours with bands coming in, plugging their equipment and rocking through their set. Vaz feels, “I hope Rockathon highlights the fact that there are a lot of talented musicians in the country.”
