Sujoy Ghosh’s adaptation of The Devotion of Suspect X on the back-burner

Sujoy Ghosh’s adaptation of The Devotion of Suspect X has been in the pipeline for around two years now, but there hasn’t been much progress. Numerous cast changes have happened since.

Vidya Balan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Kangana Ranaut’s names were associated with the film but finally Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was pencilled in with Saif Ali Khan as the male lead. It was announced by Sujoy at Cannes this year.

While Ash and Saif were all set to be paired for the first time for the on-screen adaptation of the Keigo Higashino novel, came the shocker.  The plot is  similar to Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam which released last month.

The novel revolves around how a single man goes to extreme lengths to cover up a murder committed by his neighbour and her daughter. You have to agree, this is almost similar to what we saw in the Ajay Devgn-Tabu starrer.

When asked, Saif confirms, “I have a feeling that if we had done that, we should have done it before Drishyam came out. The story is very similar to Drishyam.” Does that mean that the film has been shelved? “I don’t know and nobody has told me about it,” Saif rues.

A source close to the director reveals, “Sujoy has spaced himself out to work on his next film. He has left Devotion of Suspect X far behind now. He’s concentrating on getting the pre-production work done for Durga Rani.”
