Tamil actress Manorama, who acted in several Tamil film died at a private hospital in Mumbai on sunday morning following a heart attack.

Legendary Tamil actress Manorama died at a private hospital in Mumbai on Sunday morning following a heart attack, family sources said. 

She was 78 and is survived by her son Boopathi. Her last rites were conducted on Sunday morning in the presence of her fans and family.

Here are few things which you need to know about Manorama:

1. She was born in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu and started her acting career at the age of 12. The first film in which she played the heroine was Konjum Kumari in 1963, but her performance in the movie Thillana Mohanambal was a turning point in her career.

2. Popularly known as 'Aachi', Manorama has done playback singing for 300 songs and the first song which she sang was for the film Magale Un Samathu. She was awarded Padma Shri in 2002 and  the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for Pudhiya Pathai in 1989.

3. A versatile actress, Manorama holds a Guinness World Record for acting over 1000 Tamil films, rubbing shoulders with top stars like MGR and Sivaji Ganesan in a brilliant career spanning over six decades. she even shared the screen space with legendary comedian Mehmood in Hindi film Kunwara Baap.

4. Manorama also holds the unique distinction of having been in plays and films with five chief ministers. She played the female lead in the plays written, directed and acted in by former Tamil Nadu chief minister CN Annadurai besides appearing in plays with another chief minister M Karunanidhi.She also acted in films with MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa, both of whom later became chief ministers. Manorama also acted in Telugu films with NT Rama Rao, who went on to become chief minister of the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh.

5. Some of her best Tamil films include Anbe Vaa, Thenmazhi, Ethir Neechal, Galatta Kalyanam, Chittukuruvi, Durga Devi, Annalakshmi and Imayam.
