The actor roots for Vancouver to be the next destination for a high-profile film awards function

Actor Anil Kapoor has taken up the cudgels for Vancouver, Canada, that’s in the running to host an awards function that was earlier hosted by Toronto. Sources revealed that it is primarily due to the backing of the actor that the awards function may be held in Vancouver.

“It is more or less certain that the awards function is going to be held in Vancouver this year. In fact, the Premier of British Columbia, Christy Clark presented Anil Kapoor with a special memento in appreciation of his efforts,” say a source.

The government in Toronto had come under tremendous flak for hosting the show last year and spending tax-payer’s money to the tune of 500 crore. But this generated tremendous popularity and publicity from the expat population of the south Asia. Sources say that Vancouver is trying to repeat the feat.

“If you could put what happened in Toronto in Vancouver, it will be great. Vancouver has a vast Indian population and one of the youngest Indian populations in Canada. It is a place where the awards ceremony will feel at home,” said Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia.

She said that they are more than interested to host a Bollywood awards function.

“We put up a great show for the Winter Olympics 2010 and we will put up a great show… there are so many things we can communicate through this wonderful medium, the business of doing business. I promise you, we know we have to do a lot of work… It is the heart of creativity in Canada and it is also the gateway to North America in more ways than one. People will say, ‘Man, those Winter Olympics were good, but (this awards function) was better!’” she added, informing that Vancouver is a bustling metropolis and home to over 200,000 Indians.
