Asin quits acting after marriage: Other actresses who chose family over career

Even as several actresses, who had taken a sabbatical after marriage are making a comeback to films, Asin Thottumkal, who recently tied the knot with businessman Rahul Sharma, has sent out a message that she is not interested in taking up any acting assignments now. In an Instagram post she writes, “I’m once again reiterating that I have stopped taking up any assignments and have wrapped all my commitments before my wedding including my brand endorsements. Request people to stop making assumptions about my assignments and work as I’m not doing that at this stage. Had made this announcement before the wedding itself.”

Twinkle Khanna

She acted with all the top stars of her time from Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan to Govinda. Karan Johar has openly said that the role of Tina in Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan to Govinda. Karan Johar has openly said that the role of Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was written for her and when she refused he cast Rani Mukerji. But Twinkle has no regrets. After marrying her International Khiladi co-star Akshay Kumar, she decided to bid adieu to her acting career and embraced a completely different profession, that of interior designing. Currently, she is making waves as a writer with her book Mrs Funny Bones. The actress is happy looking after her two children Aarav and Nitara and pursuing her other interests.

Meenakshi Sheshadri

The actress was on top of her game when she hung up her acting shoes to settle into marital bliss. The actress hit big time with Hero opposite Jackie Shroff and went on to do several films like Bewafai, Meri Jung, Dacait, Shahenshah, Ghayal and Jurm. She got critical acclaim for her performance in films like Damini and Swati. Ghatak was her last film before she tied the knot with an investment banker Harish Mysore and moved to the US. She has two children, daughter Kendra and son Josh. Recently, she was in the news when Sunny Deol directed and acted in the sequel of Ghayal. Her Damini co-star Rishi Kapoor tweeted a picture of Meenakshi who is almost unrecognisable with her short hair.  

Sonam

Niece of Raza Murad, Sonam had none other than Yash Chopra launching her in the multi-starrer Vijay. She was an instant sensation thanks to her hot scenes and bold appearance in a bikini. She also grabbed attention for her Tridev song 'Oye Oye...Tirchi Topi Wale' with Naseeruddin Shah. A sex symbol, Sonam got recognition for her performance in Mitti Aur Sona and after appearing in a few more films like Vishwatma and Insaniyat she married filmmaker Rajiv Rai. She declared that she was quitting films. With their son Gaurav, the couple moved abroad after he faced a death threat here.

Kimi Katkar

This cat-eyed actress is best remembered for the song 'Jhumma Chumma' in which she was wooed by Amitabh Bachchan in Hum. Having made her debut in Tarzan, Kimi was considered a sex siren and did a few films like Vardi, Mard Ki Zubaan, Mera Lahoo, Dariya Dil and Jaisi Karni Vaisi Bharni. Her last film was Hamla after which she tied the knot with celebrity photographer Shantanu Shorey. The couple along with their son Siddharth recently moved to Goa from Australia.

Gayatri Joshi

After doing several commercials, she turned actress with Swades. She appeared as the sweet, demure girlfriend of Shah Rukh Khan and was appreciated for her role. However, that was her first and last appearance as she got married to real estate developer Vikas Oberoi and gave up her career in acting. 

Namrata Shirodkar

This former beauty queen made a name for herself in films like Vastav, Pukar and Bride And Prejudice before she went South and married Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu. She hasn’t looked back since and is happy looking after their two children — son Gowtham Krishna Gattamaneni and daughter Sitara.

Actresses who returned to films after marriage

Madhuri Dixit Nene who took a sabbatical from acting after marriage to Sriram Nene made a comeback with Aaja Nachle.

Karisma Kapoor who quit acting after her marriage  with Sanjay Kapur returned to films with Dangerous Ishq.

Kajol quit acting after she tied the knot with Ajay Devgn and made a comeback after five years with Fanaa. 

Aishwary Rai Bachchan who took a break after marriage (to Abhishek Bachchan) and motherhood returned to the silver screen after five years with Jazbaa. 

Lara Dutta took a hiatus from acting after tying the knot with Mahesh Bhupathi and having a baby. She returned with Singh Is Bliing.
