Bye bye Alan Rickman: 11 top quotes by Severus Snape in Harry Potter
'Always'
Harry Potter movie series won’t be same again as the British actor who portrayed the role of Professor Snape in the series has passed away in London at the age of 69.
Alan Rickman, who made his mark as the bad guy with his cruel, drawling and ever-hypnotic role in the fantasy movie series, was suffering from cancer, the Guardian reported. The actor’s family confirmed the sad news. Rickman kick-started his acting career with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the late '70s and early '80s, before moving onto British TV shows and Broadway.
Despite his numerous roles, many of us will always remember Alan Rickman as Professor Snape, the professor who gave the impression of hating Harry and doing the Dark Lord’s bidding but was actually the good guy in sheep’s clothing.
Interestingly, Rickman was the only other person other than JK Rowling who was aware that Professor Snape was actually a good man and had revealed the end to him. Here are 11 dialogues from Harry Potter which perfectly captures the essence of Snape:
1) This conversation between Snape and Dumbledore when he pleads for Lily’s life
“The — the prophecy . . . the prediction . . . Trelawney . . .” “Ah, yes. How much did you relay to Lord Voldemort?” “Everything — everything I heard! That is why — it is for that reason — he thinks it means Lily Evans!”
“The prophecy did not refer to a woman. It spoke of a boy born at the end of July —” “You know what I mean! He thinks it means her son, he is going to hunt her down — kill them all —”
“If she means so much to you, surely Lord Voldemort will spare her? Could you not ask for mercy for the mother, in exchange for the son?”
“I have — I have asked him —” “You disgust me.”
2) When he learns that Voldemort has killed James and Lily.
"I wish... I wish I were dead..."
3) When Snape explains that Potions is a bit different from the rest of the magic they’d be taught at Hogwarts.
“You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making. As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses. . . I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death — if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.”
4) When Snape says this in the Shrieking Sack, and everyone thinks it’s aimed at Sirius and Lupin but is actually aimed at Peter Pettigrew.
"Vengeance is very sweet."
5) When Snape is summoned by Umbridge and we see his cunning side
"I have no idea. Potter, when I want nonsense shouted at me I shall give you a Babbling Beverage. And Crabbe, loosen your hold a little, if Longbottom suffocates it will mean a lot of tedious paperwork, and I am afraid I shall have to mention it on you reference if ever you apply for a job."
6) When Severus Snape takes no prisoners
“Detention, Saturday night, my office,” said Snape. “I do not take cheek from anyone, Potter . . . not even ‘the Chosen One.’”
7) When Dumbledore asks Snape to kill him instead of letting Draco do it, to protect Draco’s soul.
"And my soul, Dumbledore? Mine?"
8) When Snape learns that Harry is to be killed
“I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter’s son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter —”
9) When Snape is dying and asks Harry to look into his eyes
“Look . . . at . . . me. . . .”
10) Perhaps the defining moment in Severus and Lily’s relationship which sent him the dark side while she ended up with James.
"I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!"
11) When Dumbledore sees Snape’s Patronus and asks if he still loves Lily Potter.
"Always."
