Chacha Chaudhary: Reliving Pran Kumar Sharma's legacy
A few days before turning 76, Pran Kumar Sharma—the creator of popular comic book character 'Chacha Chaudhary'—passed away of cancer, on Tuesday night. Leaving his legacy behind, he will always be remembered by the 70's generation and all the generations that followed.
Chacha Chaudhary, India's most-loved cartoon character became a rage among not just children, but adults were equally fond of him. The character was first sketched for the Hindi magazine Lotpot in 1969. Indians were gifted this homegrown comic character who uptill then had to make do with reproductions of foreign titles like 'Phantom' and 'Superman'.
Pran Kumar Sharma bagged numerous awards including a mention in the Limca Book of Records in 1995 as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award 2001 from Indian Institute of Cartoonists.
The World Encyclopedia of Comics describes him as the 'Walt Disney of India' and 'Chacha Chaudhary' strip is featured as the US-based International Museum of Cartoon Art.
Paying a tribute to the cartoonist, we reminiscence the unforgettable characters from the comic, that will make you feel old by taking you back to the days, where the biggest of problems appeared too small.
Chacha Chaudhary
The old wise man who was born in 1971, knows how to tackle any difficult task with ease. There has never passed an episode where he is defeated by criminals or tricksters. His unique way of fighting them adds humour to the situation. Eventually, the character inspires its readers by fighting the evil, by using brains first.
Sabu
Chacha Ji's tall and robust friend-cum-accomplice is an alien from Jupiter. He is an ideal company to Chacha Chowdhary, as the duo is an amalgamation of strength and wisdom, which is enough to curb the crime in the society.
Bini Chachi
Chacha Chaudhary's wife Bini is a dominating and loud character, who is the most authoritative at house. Chachi often uses her belan to beat thieves. Like other Indian wives, she is often shown complaining to her husband for not buying her gold bangles.
Rocket
Adding Indian-ism to the name, Chachaji calls his pet dog as 'Raaket'. In the comic series, he is defined in the line 'Chacha Chaudhary ka kutta sssurrllpp sssuurrllppp doodh peeta hai', and the fact that he is the only vegetarian dog in the whole world. Raaket has often helped Chacha Ji fighting foes.
Chajju Chowdhary
Chacha Ji's twin brother Chajju dodges the goons, and proves as a secret weapon to Chacha Chudhary, as he looks exactly like Chacha Ji.
