Bollywood has witnesses one of the biggest clashes of recent times this Friday. When Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale went head to head with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani starring Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh. The first weekend is over and the verdict is out. While both films have managed to do decent business at the box office, one has expectedly taken the lead.
Who? Rohit Shetty's Dilwale. Given that the film had star power working in its favour, we aren't surprised. Rather the collections have been quite good for the films, despite the titanic clash of screens. So here's the lowdown!
Bajirao Mastani:
After an average opening of Rs 12.80 crore, the film grew superbly on day two thanks to a great word of mouth that spread all over. The film netted in around Rs 15 crore on day two and it faced further growth on Sunday. BM had another 15% increase in its collections on day three, netting in around he Rs 17 crore range. With that the total opening weekend collections of the film settle at around Rs 45 crore, which might be decent knowing that it faced stiff competition from the SRK-Kajol starrer but it has fallen short of what it should have done, given the heavy production costs involved.
Dilwale:
Having the magical pairing of SRK-Kajol and Varun Dhawan in tow, Dilwale could have never gone wrong. Although the film received average to negative reviews by most critics, the film managed to put up a great show at the ticket counters. A film that caters to the family audience received a thumbs up from them and despite the huge backlash it is facing in some key centres, the film managed to cross the Rs 20 crore mark consistently. While it netted around Rs 21 crore on its first day, it added another Rs 20 crore on Saturday. The film had a huge growth on Sunday and the film collected around Rs 23-24 crore on Sunday. With that, the opening weekend collection stand at around Rs 65 crore which is more than good for the film. But unlike other big films, the film couldn't perform as well, courtesy the division of screens and the big clash that ensued. Nevertheless, Dilwale is already in safe waters whereas Bajirao will now have to buckle up.
