Filmmaker Rajiv Rai and actress Sonam have called it quits after 25 years of marriage. The duo have been living separately for the past 15 years. Their official divorce came through on July 25 this year.
According to a report in Times of India, Rajiv, son of producer Gulshan Rai, confirmed the news saying that they decided to go for legal separation in June 2015 and filed for a divorce by mutual consent on January 21 this year. Rajiv was quoted as saying, "Sonam and I didn't have a showdown or argument. We've never had any verbal disagreements over this decision. There is no specific reason why things didn't work out for us. We were trying hard to make our marriage work but somewhere along the way it collapsed." Rajiv added that nobody was at fault for the fallout of their marriage.
The report further added that the two held on to their marriage for so long as they were waiting for their son to turn 18. Now that he is 23, he has accepted their decision with maturity. Rajiv added that if he (their son) would have vetoed it, they wouldn't have gone ahead with the divorce, reports TOI.
Sonam had married Rajiv on January 21, 1991 after 3 years of courtship. At that time she was at the prime of her career though she quit acting post marriage. On the other hand, Rajiv made Gupt post marriage. The duo had left India and settled in Los Angeles after Rajiv was threatened by the underworld in 1997. They moved back to Mumbai a few years ago but have been living separately since 2001.
